Peten / Tikal

The area of Peten is the largest department of Guatemala, occupies about a third of Guatemala but contains over three per cent of its population. This area produces wood, chewing gum, oil, pepper and other agricultural products. Its main income comes from the worldwide known cradle of the Mayan civilization.

Declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Tikal National Park shelters the remains of one of the largest and most important cities in the Pre-Hispanic history of the Maya Civilization as well as 550 square kilometers of exuberant rainforest, home to a great diversity of flora and fauna.
